The Dutch embassy in Washington D.C. is organizing a design contest, where designers have the goal to create the perfect new giveaway for the Dutch government. For this contest, the Netherlands embassy partners up with Kikkerland Design Inc., Shapeways and the New York Museum of Arts and Design (MAD).
The Dutch embassy was searching for the perfect new giveaway to distribute in the United Stated and became inspired by the exhibition “Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital“, and the many Dutch designers participating in that exhibition. It can still be visited in MAD until the first of June. The embassy invites designers to submit “inventive, quirky and smart ideas for a functional and affordable small item inspired by Dutch Design”.
The competition is open for anyone and the embassy hopes that Dutch designers will join the competition, as well as US designers inspired by Dutch design. If you are a designer yourself and if you would like to join this thing, you can submit your idea until March 7th.
Shapeways will then make a 3D print of the top 10 entries, which will be exhibited in a contemporary exhibition “somewhere” in New York City. The idea is that visitors will be voting on their favorite design, after which the embassy will count votes and announces the winning design in mid-April. Kikkerland Design Inc. will then produce this design to the US and global markets and the Dutch government will buy 500 pieces of it, in order to officially use it as their US giveaway. But that’s not it yet, as the winner will be offered a weeklong residency at Shapeways headquarters in New York, with the flight and accommodation included in the prize.
