Dita von Teese turned the world of fashion upside down last year when she wore a 3D printed gown. Michael Schmidt was the designer of the gown, but the technique of 3D printed clothes even raised the question what the world needs designers for in a world where anyone could print out its own set of clothes. Probably that thought goes a little too far, but no-one can deny it surely is happening: the trend of 3D printed clothes. Now all eyes are on Electroloom, a company working on the first 3D printer to print out comfortable sets of clothes.
Yesterday the company posted two remarkable photos of 3D printed clothes on its Facebook page. On these images a male model is wearing 3D printed shirts. On the first one, he goes for a printed V-neck and on the second one he pulls of a additively manufactured tank top. However, these shirts are still prototypes and the company is still testing its printer.
The company is now working on a system to produce clothes made of more complicated shapes from fibers that look like cotton. That however is very difficult and the company therefore experiments with composites of synthetic and organic materials. The pictured shirts in this article are most probably printed using such materials.
A 3D clothes printer could enable anyone to print out clothes at their own living room, therefore not having the need to go to a shop anymore. Nevertheless, clothes shops seem to be interested in this printer. American Apparel even funds the project, as Electroloom has won its Alternative Grands contest last year’s December.
The team behind Electroloom is currently working on creating a fully working prototype and is in search of investors, according to its website. In the future, people will be able to print out designs via an online CAD-file. At the end of the year the team dreams to be able to produce well-wearable clothes using cotton.
Cotton is a very important material in the production process and more parties are searching for ways to properly implement them into the 3D printing process. That is still a difficulty and recently open innovation company InnoCentive had therefore set up a challenge for people to come up with the best idea to do so. The challenge closed two months ago.
