Dr. Tang Juyu from Xiangya Hospital has employed 3D scanning and printing methods to create a full replica of a young woman named Xiaoqian’s right tibia (the larger and stronger of the two bones in the leg below the knee in vertebrates), which was damaged in a serious car accident when she was 7 years old. The accident caused Xiaoqian’s right tibia to grow with a noticeable unnatural bend, resulting her right leg to be significantly small than the left.
The unnatural bending of her right leg was fixed in Xiangya Hospital in 2014. However Dr. Tang Juyu and his team decided to develop a treatment for Xiaoqian’s severely tibia using 3d printing technologies. His team worked for months with the replica of Xiaoqian’s right tibia to create a complete and comprehensive surgical plan.
A few months later, Dr. Juyu and his team carried out the operation focused on the right tibia, in an attempt to straighten Xiaoqian’s right leg once and for all. The surgery was successfully completed after three hours, with screws and plates attached in between the bones.
Dr. Tang Juyu announced, “We transformed Xiaoqian’s ‘big bend deformity’ into one of several “small bends’ by using osteotomy. After rehabilitation and complete healing, she will be able to walk like a normal girl.”
