This month, a company based in Russia called “3D Bio printing Solutions” became the first in the world to 3d print a thyroid gland for an animal with their own patented bio printing technology.
The company’s focus is set to transplant the 3d printed thyroid gland to living rats suffering from a disease called “Hypothyroidism”, a medical condition caused by an overload of iodine in the body. 3D bio printing solutions aim to successfully transplant the artificial thyroid and publish the results by the second week of July, hopefully by the 9th or the 10th.
According to the company’s researchers, the team chose the thyroid to work with due to its simplicity. Along with this advantage, the company also stated that thyroid cancer is rated as the 16th most frequently diagnosed cancer, with over 300,000 diagnoses in 2012.
The company believes that once the clinical trials on animals are approved, this technology could potentially decrease the number of patients suffering from thyroid cancer worldwide, finally providing a much needed solution for one of the most frequent kinds of cancer.
Furthermore, the company stated that 3d printing the thyroid gland is just the beginning of their grand project, and that they aim to 3d print other organs in the human body such as the kidney within the next three years.
