Snowboards have traditionally been made of wood, resin, laminates, and P-Tex—until now! Combining 3D printing with their favourite activity, the Signal Snowboard’s factory crew, led by founder Dave Lee collaborate with GROWit 3D to print out a brand new snowboard. Using carbon material, the world’s first 3D printed snowboard had to be manufactured in a puzzle-like pieces that were put together to make a full length board. They had to do this because there isn’t an SLS printer available that had the print platform able to print a full length board in one print.
For the print they used an Objet Connex 500 and after printing the puzzle pieces they strengthened it with metal bars. After that, it was ready to hit the steep and deep of Colorado. Check out this video that shows the printing process and the first ride EVER of a 3D printed snowboard!
