I’ve owned three Ultimaker printers; the S5 is my current printer. The printer is not flawless, but the one-star review is B.S. The quality from an Ultimaker, including the S5, is best-in-class. The printer is slow when printing from both nozzles, because the auto-lifting is mechanical. Printing from one nozzle, the printer is typical in speed for a high resolution desktop printer. The auto-leveling works well, but requires that the nozzles be clean. Of course, getting a good quality print also requires the nozzles to be clean. The build volume is huge, the NFC sensor allows you to track filament usage, and the flow sensors not only work well, but can be bypassed with the flick of a switch on the color display. If you want high-speed, low resolution prints in PLA, this printer is not for you. But for high-quality, end-use products in engineering grade materials, the Ultimaker S5 is superb. One final note: Ultimaker says the S5 hot end goes up to 280°C, but in reality, it allows you to print up to 300°C. With an added enclosure, that means it can print any material on the market except Ultem, PEEK, and their derivatives.
To be honest I did expect more from this printer and Ultimaker. I have now been working with the S5 for a little over a year. both one of the first models and one of the latest. and the printer is kinda bad. “for the price”
Pros:
1. Easy to changes printhead and easy alignment proses.
if you have diffrent nozzles for special types of filament its nice and easy to changes between them. and the printer will remember the print cores so no need to realign after a changes.
2. Auto bed levelling.
Ensures you have a level bed gives a peace of mind for big prints. (maybe a con: auto levelling can’t be turned off)
“On the old models the auto bed levelling was pretty temperamental and ditten work properly most the time. but this have more or less been fixed on the new ones”
3. Dual head extrusion. If you have a lot of prints that require Pva support, the printer do the dual head lifting pretty well. But the system is slow at changing, due to the manual lift system.
Cones:
1: The machine have a really heavy print head so unless you print really slow sub 25mm/s it will have a lot of ghosting/ringing in the print. In general, ringing is a problem on the printer.
2: The part cooling from the print head is insufficient and therefor the printer have a hard time printing overhangs.
3: The wi-fi is not usable “extremely unstable” so if you wanna use Cura conet or the webcam you need to use the ethernet.
(Ultimaker has stated that this have been fixet in newer models, but if you read the Ultimaker forum its still a problem. so keep that in mind if you are depended on wi-fi)
Print quality. I will not put this in neither pros or cons.
I have seen the printer do gorgeous prints but also fail at some of the most simple taskes. In general I wish the print quality and accuracy was better. The U3 and U2 have a much higer print quality and accuracy. So if you dont absolutely need the volume go for one of them.
Overall the machine is okay when it works. but there is just to meany issues, bugs and bad firmware updates, for this price range.
