Standard Products is a Dutch-based company that develops an online platform for digitally-crafted furniture. It was founded by designers Jesse Kirschner and Jesse Howard and they’ll launch their first collection of Standard Products at the Dutch Design Week (from 22 – 30 October, 2016). The funds generated from their recently launched Kickstarter campaign will be used to further develop the online platform.
How does it work
Standard Products’ created a few base templates (a stool and a cupboard) that can be modified in the online editor. When you’re done editing, the tool tells you how many connectors and wood you need. You can then choose to print and assemble your custom furniture yourself or you choose to receive the end product produced by Standard Products. They explain everything in the video below.
Making furniture with 3D printed connectors
Making your own furniture with 3D printed connectors is not an entirely new thing, but what makes this a good concept is the way the online editor will function and the materials used for the connectors.
The development of the materials used for the 3D printed connectors is done by DSM, a multinational active in the fields of health, nutrition and materials. They’ve developed a Nylon that’s both strong and a tad bit flexible.
The 3D models in the editor are programmatically generated 3D models that are easily customisable in your browser. The development of the customising tool is done by Openplus, the company where Jesse Kirschner works as a Chief Design Officer.
A demo of the work-in-progress interface is online now here.
Standard Products first collection consists of a stool and a cupboard. In order to keep the end-product as accessible as can be, the first requirement of the concept is that it is possible to print the connectors on a normal desktop 3D printer. The other requirement is that the other materials can all be obtained in the local hardware store.
