An engagement ring is not that kind of thing you usually order online. If you can’t fit the ring beforehand, there’s a huge risk the ring won’t fit properly. Nevertheless, there are online retailers that sell wedding rings online, and one of them is a company called Brilliance. They’ve probably experienced this disadvantage of their online model, so what they came up with is a smart solution, using 3D printing techniques.
Their new program is called 3D Ring and it enables you to order 3D printed versions of the ring before the actual sell. If you have access to a 3D printer, then a 3D print file will be sent to your computer. Users who don’t have a 3D printer themselves, can receive 3D printed rings from Brilliance by post. The 3D Ring program also allows people to 3D print their rings in different sizes, so customers can accurately find out which size fits best.
To CNET, Brilliance’s director of strategic partnerships Shai Barel points out another advantage of this new system: “Although everyone thinks they would want a 2-carat diamond ring, sometimes it would look funny if the person’s fingers are too thin. The same is true with the shape of the ring. A 1-carat round-cut diamond looks bigger than a 1-carat in any other shape. Providing customers with the ability to see and feel what they would like to purchase is golden.” Golden. Ha, pun.
NET’s amanda Kooser tried them on herself and after wearing all different kinds of rings, she concluded: “This is like having a high-tech jeweler show you your options without the bother of traveling to a jewelry store and the pressure of making such an emotional decision too quickly. There’s something comforting about holding a 3D-printed model in your hand as you leisurely examine your options online.”
