Amerimix’s 3D Printing Mortar Advances Sustainable Homebuilding

September 20, 2024

Amerimix, a division of Oldcastle APG, a CRH Company, has announced the successful use of its 3D Printing Mortar Mix in the construction of three 3D-printed homes in Shiner, Texas. This project, carried out by New Standard Homes, represents a significant step toward improving the affordability, efficiency, and quality of home construction through cutting-edge technology.

The collaboration aimed to demonstrate the potential of 3D printing to streamline the building process while reducing costs. Jason Dean, Senior Vice President of Pro Sales at Oldcastle APG, explained the company’s vision: “We are looking at cutting-edge technology to help shape the future of the building industry. We want to align with builders and developers to achieve their customers’ dream living spaces while creating job efficiencies and cost savings.”

A New Standard for Sustainable Housing

The project’s objective was to fast-track the construction of the three test homes using Amerimix’s AMX300 3D Printing Mortar Mix, a custom formulation developed in partnership with PERI 3D Construction. The gantry-style 3D printer, manufactured by COBOD and leased from PERI, allowed the team to print entire walls in continuous passes, enhancing jobsite efficiency and improving build quality.

New Standard Homes’ owner, Rex Rizk, emphasized the broader impact of the project: “We’re not just building houses; we’re creating homes that elevate living standards with cleaner lines, superior finishes, and greater durability.” He explained that the goal is to set a new benchmark for affordable, sustainable housing, with homes designed in architectural styles that appeal to modern buyers. The model home is planned to be 1,500 square feet and priced between $350,000 and $400,000.

Speed and Efficiency in 3D Printing

Using nearly 150 bulk bags of the custom-formulated AMX300 3D Printing Mix, the first home, measuring 1,200 square feet, was printed in approximately six weeks. However, subsequent homes, each around 1,500 square feet, were completed in just three to three-and-a-half weeks due to optimization of the machine setup, layer time, and printing speed. This efficiency has the potential to increase further as the process continues to be refined.

Rizk expressed optimism about future advancements, stating, “New Standard Homes’ ultimate goal is to print one 1,500 square foot house per week, which is entirely feasible with our new designs.” He also highlighted the benefits of concrete as a long-lasting, durable, and sustainable building material, emphasizing that this technology is “the future” of construction.

Looking forward, New Standard Homes is committed to advancing the capabilities of construction technology. Rizk added, “We are at the forefront of reinventing how our world is built. This technology is a key component of our vision to provide better homes for everyone.” The homes, once completed, will be marketed as potential rentals and located near local amenities in Shiner, Texas.

New Standard Homes is currently reviewing proposals for its next 3D-printed housing project, continuing its efforts to push the boundaries of modern home construction.
