ASTM International’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE), along with various industry partners, has announced the launch of the Additive Manufacturing Certification Committee (AMCC). Composed solely of 3D printing end-users, this committee aims to establish audit criteria to qualify AM facilities based on international standards and best practices.
Collaborative Effort Across Industries
The AMCC brings together stakeholders from aerospace, defense, medical, and transportation sectors. Over the past year, these members have developed standardized requirements to qualify AM facilities, with the first version of the audit criteria nearing completion.
“The work of the AMCC enables a better understanding of the capabilities of additive manufacturing suppliers amidst the rapid growth of providers in this technology area,” said Melissa Orme, vice president of additive manufacturing at The Boeing Company.
Founding Members and Contributions
The committee includes representatives from Ford Motor Company, Lockheed Martin, and Johnson & Johnson, among others. “The efforts of the Additive Manufacturing Certification Committee stand to benefit our industry. The AMCC provides a great platform for end-users across multiple sectors to collaboratively address common qualification challenges in additive manufacturing,” stated Joseph Murphy, Associate Fellow at Lockheed Martin.
The multi-industry participation ensures that best practices are adopted for qualifying and certifying AM production parts. The audit criteria aim to meet multi-industry requirements, helping organizations qualify their suppliers or internal facilities.
Significance and Future Goals
“Developing certification criteria is a detailed and resource-intensive process, but the resulting value for our organization and the industry as a whole will be substantial,” said Eddie Kavanagh, senior principal engineer at Johnson & Johnson. The AMCC will develop, deploy, and maintain the audit criteria and manage the certification program.
Paul Wolcott, senior engineer for additive manufacturing at General Motors, added, “Establishing a standardized certification for Additive Manufacturing (AM) service providers will help streamline industry efforts to develop a robust AM supply chain.”
The AMCC initiative, driven by ASTM International’s AM CoE, is set to enhance the certification and qualification processes for additive manufacturing, benefiting multiple industry sectors through collaborative efforts and standardized practices.
