Optomec and Siemens Introduce Advanced Solution for Metal Repair with Additive Manufacturing

November 18, 2024

Optomec has partnered with Siemens to unveil a next-generation solution for laser cladding in high-value metal repair. The integration of the Optomec CS 558 system with Siemens’ SINUMERIK ONE control platform streamlines maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) processes, offering a simplified and automated approach to additive manufacturing in production environments.

A Shift Toward Automated Metal Repair

Unlike traditional laser cladding systems, which are labor-intensive and require high levels of operator skill, the Optomec-Siemens solution leverages advanced hardware and software to improve productivity and reduce costs. The CS 558 system, equipped with Optomec’s proprietary Autoclad® vision software, generates custom toolpaths for each part, enabling precise repairs of complex components made from mixed materials.

The SINUMERIK ONE control platform adds to this innovation with high-speed CNC capabilities, ensuring path precision for machining freeform surfaces and stable performance under high-load conditions. This combination allows manufacturers to repair reactive metals such as titanium in controlled environments, restoring worn or damaged parts to their original performance standards.

Unlocking New Potential in Laser Cladding

The solution expands the capabilities of directed energy deposition (DED), enabling laser cladding to enhance the performance, longevity, and reliability of metal components across various industries. The global laser cladding market, valued at $561.3 million in 2023, is projected to grow at a CAGR of 9.3% through 2030, according to Grand View Research.

By leveraging this advanced solution, manufacturers in aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, marine, medical, and electronics industries can automate complex repair workflows, improve efficiency, and achieve faster return on investment.

Industry Collaboration Driving Innovation

“Optomec and Siemens are introducing a transformative solution for the MRO of high-value metals in production environments that is a paradigm shift for the industry,” said Robert Yusin, CEO of Optomec. “This next-generation solution maximizes efficiency, minimizes complexity, and significantly reduces time to ROI for our customers.”

Steve Vosmik, Head of Additive Manufacturing, US at Siemens, highlighted the significance of this collaboration: “By integrating SINUMERIK ONE with Optomec’s advanced CS 558 platform, we are delivering a solution that simplifies complex repair processes with unprecedented precision and efficiency. This not only addresses current industry demands but sets a new benchmark for the future of high-value metal repair in sectors like aerospace and energy.”

A New Standard for Additive Manufacturing

With its digital-native control system and seamless integration of hardware and software, this joint solution is poised to redefine standards in additive manufacturing for high-value metal repair. Combining Optomec’s directed energy deposition expertise with Siemens’ cutting-edge automation technology, this innovation positions both companies at the forefront of the evolving MRO landscape.
