Titomic’s cold spray additive manufacturing technology will be used on Woodside Energy’s offshore gas platform through contractor Monadelphous. This marks an Australian first for cold spray 3D printing in such an application.
The low-pressure cold spray process allows for the deposition of corrosion-resistant materials like aluminum directly onto the platform’s steel structures without requiring heat or disassembly. This method is crucial for maintenance, fabricating freestanding parts, and building features onto existing infrastructure.
Research by Woodside FutureLab at Monash University identified practical applications for this technology, particularly for effective corrosion prevention and remediation. Implementing this in a real-world setting demonstrates its potential in the oil and gas industry. The remote nature of many operations in this sector makes on-site repairs and minimal disassembly particularly advantageous for cost and time efficiency.
Titomic Managing Director Herbert Koeck highlighted that this partnership not only proves the efficacy of their cold spray solutions but also paves the way for additional opportunities within the oil and gas industry.
