Vivobarefoot has launched the Hybrid Wing, a limited edition shoe employing a 3D printed design for a custom fit. Users scan their feet via smartphone, adjusting length and width with an online visualizer. The shoes are then 3D printed and delivered within six weeks to four months, promoting waste reduction by producing only as needed.
The Hybrid Wing aligns with the growing trend in outdoor gear towards sustainable 3D printing. Its circular knitting process creates a seamless 3D foot shape for the shoe’s upper, minimizing material waste. The soles and uppers are bonded using an automated assembly process with a gluing robot, enhancing production speed, accuracy, and efficiency.
Though not fully bespoke yet, Vivobarefoot aims for a made-to-order, locally produced, and fully remade shoe model. The Hybrid Wing is designed with a wide, thin, and flexible structure, adhering to the brand’s distinctive barefoot shoe style. The initial release, featuring two colorways—Obsidian/Origin Red and Obsidian Origin Blue—is limited to 2,000 pairs available exclusively in the UK at £260 each.
This approach not only reduces waste but also exemplifies the potential of 3D printing in footwear manufacturing. The ability to customize fit and minimize material use represents a significant advancement in sustainable production. For more details and to order, visit vivobarefoot.com.
