Boston Micro Fabrication Opens UltraThineer Lab to Advance 3D-Printed Cosmetic Veneers

November 20, 2024

Boston Micro Fabrication (BMF), a leader in ultra-high-precision 3D printing, has officially launched the UltraThineer Lab at its U.S. headquarters. This new facility is dedicated to the production and advancement of UltraThineer veneers, the world’s thinnest 3D-printed cosmetic veneers. Utilizing BMF’s proprietary Projection Micro Stereolithography (PµSL) technology, the lab aims to redefine cosmetic dentistry by offering patients and dentists a more precise, minimally invasive solution.

A New Standard in Veneers

UltraThineer veneers stand out as a transformative innovation in dental aesthetics. At just 0.08 mm thick, these ultra-thin zirconia veneers are three times thinner than traditional options, which typically measure around 0.5 mm or more. This exceptional thinness allows for greater enamel preservation, reduced preparation time, and a more comfortable experience for patients seeking aesthetic restoration.

“I believe it is important to preserve natural, healthy teeth while offering patients subtle enhancements like shade changes and shape adjustments,” said Jessica Birrell, owner of Capture Dental Arts. “Traditional veneering often requires significant tooth reduction, leading to potential sensitivity. UltraThineer’s ultra-thin design simplifies this process, making conservative veneering more accessible than ever.”

Backed by FDA Clearance

BMF’s UltraThineer veneers received FDA 510(k) clearance in early 2024, marking a significant milestone in dental innovation. Since then, the company has partnered with accredited dental labs to conduct test cases, demonstrating the material’s reliability and precision. The combination of strength and thinness ensures a superior fit, enabling optimal cosmetic results while preserving more of the natural tooth structure.

Expanding Access to Advanced Dentistry

The launch of the UltraThineer Lab reflects BMF’s commitment to addressing key challenges in cosmetic dentistry. By leveraging its ultra-high-precision technology, the lab provides dentists and patients with an alternative to traditional veneers that is less invasive and more comfortable.

“Our approach to innovation focuses on areas where our technology can have the greatest impact,” said John Kawola, CEO-Global at BMF. “The UltraThineer Lab allows us to meet the growing demand for thinner, less invasive veneers, providing patients with a more seamless and precise solution for aesthetic restoration.”

BMF is also inviting dental labs across the U.S. to collaborate as partners in bringing UltraThineer veneers to more practices. Internationally, the company continues to expand its offerings with Venust in China and LaBriller in Japan, supporting access to thinner veneers in these markets.
