Printpool, a UK 3D printing bureau, has launched a new training course aimed at existing CAD users to help them maximise the benefits of 3D printing. The course, called “Additive Advantage,” will consist of four modules covering additive fundamentals, designing lighter, and adding complexity.
It will be delivered both in-person at Printpool’s Oxford base and online, starting in April 2023. The course will be hardware and software agnostic (quite rightly), allowing participants to use the CAD software they are already familiar with.
Unlike most training options available in the UK, the course will not focus on setting up a 3D printer or simple design rules for 3D printed parts. Rather, participants will learn about the basic 3D printing types, how to choose the best one for a given project, and how to design for them.
“Since Printpool opened its doors, we’ve seen a lot of designs sent to us that simply aren’t printable,” said Gerard Shields, managing director at Printpool.
“While we can help to rework designs to make them suitable for additive manufacturing, it would be so much better for everyone if this was known from the start. Additive manufacturing unlocks so many design possibilities – once designers know what is possible, we will see some amazing new 3D printed products out there.”
The course will also cover more complex topics such as generative design and latticing to build upon this core foundation. The designers of the course believe that understanding the intent behind processes is more valuable than simply learning how to navigate a particular software GUI. The goal is to help designers create designs that are printable from the start, unlocking the full potential of additive manufacturing.
