3D Printing Streamlines Kayak Development

October 31, 2023

Melker of Sweden, a renowned sport kayak manufacturer, has adopted a unique approach to product development by leveraging the capabilities of large scale 3D printing. The company now 3D prints full-sized prototype kayaks for real-world testing, significantly reducing the time and resources traditionally required for such endeavors. Through this method, Melker introduced a new kayak tailored for the North American market in just six months, a process that would typically span two years.

Historically, kayak development involved the expensive and time-consuming process of crafting metal molds for injection molding. Each design change necessitated a new mold, increasing costs and generating plastic waste. 3D printing, however, facilitates the creation of countless prototypes at a fraction of the conventional cost, empowering companies like Melker to refine their designs more thoroughly.

Moreover, Melker has made commendable strides in sustainability. The company 3D prints its prototypes using polymers derived from discarded fishing nets mixed with wood fibers, a waste product from Sweden’s timber sector. This eco-friendly approach aligns with Melker’s foundational mission of enhancing sustainability in outdoor equipment manufacturing.

In the future, the industry might witness a greater emphasis on sustainability, with Melker aspiring to utilize entirely plant-based materials for their kayaks, ensuring they are fully recyclable.
