Humtown Products, an Ohio-based company, is positioning itself to serve manufacturers looking to bring production back to the United States. The company specializes in 3D printing sand cores and molds for foundries and original equipment manufacturers, offering an alternative to traditional tooling processes that can create delays in domestic production launches.
According to the Reshoring Initiative’s 2023 Data Report, more than 350,000 jobs were reshored in 2022, up significantly from fewer than 6,000 jobs annually in the early 2010s. U.S. manufacturing has declined from 28% of GDP in 1953 to around 11% today, according to Bureau of Economic Analysis data cited by the company.
“We’re seeing a surge of interest from foundries and OEMs that want to move production back to the U.S. but are hitting roadblocks due to tooling constraints,” said Mark A. Lamoncha, President & CEO of Humtown. “With 3D printing, there’s no tooling required. Companies can send us their print-ready CAD files and we can immediately begin printing the sand molds and cores needed for casting.”
The company reports it is now handling full-scale production runs rather than just prototypes. Brandon Lamoncha, Director of Additive Manufacturing at Humtown, stated: “We’re printing thousands of cores for full production runs, at a cost that’s becoming competitive with traditional manufacturing.”
Construction spending on new U.S. manufacturing facilities reached a record $108 billion in 2022, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. Federal legislation including the CHIPS and Science Act and Buy American mandates are creating additional incentives for domestic production, particularly in advanced manufacturing sectors.
Founded in 1959, Humtown Products operates from northeastern Ohio and serves the automotive, heavy equipment, defense, and aerospace sectors. The family-owned company has expanded beyond traditional metalcasting services to include its additive manufacturing division focused on 3D printing applications for foundry production.
