LOWPOLY Unveils Coffee Grounds-Based 3D Printed Furniture

June 7, 2024

In Barcelona’s historic Casa Calvet, D·Origen Coffee Shop has revealed their 3D printed furniture made from coffee grounds. Designed by Gianluca Pugliese of LOWPOLY, the furniture utilizes the innovative LOWIMPACT material, which blends recycled PLA with coffee grounds. This project highlights sustainable design by repurposing coffee waste into functional elements.

The custom furniture, including counters, lamps, and stools, complements the historic architecture. The counters, crafted from LOWIMPACT material, feature unique amber textures that create striking light effects when backlit. With 98% organic content, this biodegradable and petroleum-free material combines recycled coffee grounds with various polymers for diverse colors and textures.

Collaborating with designer Arturo Tedeschi, the team used AI and parametric design to enhance sensory experiences. Advanced 3D printing techniques and industrial robotic arms were employed to produce five unique pieces, ensuring precision and aesthetic coherence.

D·Origen Coffee Shop serves as a model of circular design, using recycled coffee grounds to address environmental issues. This project underscores the potential for sustainable materials in design and construction, setting a new benchmark for eco-friendly practices in the specialty coffee industry.
