How to 3D Print a Longboard with the DeltaWASP 3MT

January 20, 2017

Now that we’ve solved the concave issue the DeltaWASP 3MT is pretty much printing 24/7. We’ve moved from vases and lamp shades to chairs and tables, the bigger stuff.

A new project we’re working on is 3D printing a longboard. The cool thing about printing a board is that you can easily make some customisations. Add / remove a shark bite out of the tail or add a logo, it’s all pretty easy to do – with the right tools.

Fusion 360

So I fired up Fusion 360 again and started out with Sketching a Spline in of course the shape of a longboard. I made mine 910mm long and 240mm wide. When you’re happy with the outline extrude it up to 30mm. You could try to make it thinner, but keep in mind that you need it to be strong enough. I also added a fillet, to not make it a little less square on the edges.

PLA pellets

We used Formfutura‘s upcycled PLA pellets. Great quality PLA with good adhesion.

Slicing settings

Infill
In Cura I tried a few infill percentages and in the end came to the conclusion that 60% infill (in grid-style) was enough for it to be both strong and a bit flexible.

Fans
You’ll never hear me say this again, but a bit of warping is actually pretty good for the shape of the longboard. Leave the fans off if you prefer a straight board.

Other settings

  • 2mm bottom and top thickness
  • 3mm shell thickness
  • print speed (mm/s): 70
  • 185°C printing temperature
  • 70°C bed temperature (because of the size of the bed with 70°C you”ll reach 50°C on the edges
