Italy has generously contributed a reconstructed Assyrian artifact, the Bull of Nimrud, to Iraq after the original was destroyed in 2015.
Through 3D printing, Italian artisans recreated the 5-meter-tall statue, symbolizing a triumph of cultural diplomacy. The replica, previously showcased in Rome and Paris, now stands proudly at the entrance of the Basrah Museum.
Italy’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage underscores its dedication to fostering international collaboration in heritage protection. This initiative, led by former Culture Minister Francesco Rutelli and supported by various stakeholders, including the Associazione Incontro di Civiltà, exemplifies the power of cultural diplomacy in bridging nations and preserving history.
“Italy is at the forefront of safeguarding cultural heritage because it is the soul of a nation and embodies its history,” said Gennaro Sangiuliano, Italy’s current culture minister.
“It will therefore continue to make every effort to advance international collaboration in the field of cultural heritage protection and to work for the enhancement of the heritage of humanity.”
The Bull of Nimrud, once a symbol of Assyrian civilization, represents resilience amid destruction, offering hope for the preservation of our shared heritage. Its return to Iraq marks a significant milestone in cultural restitution efforts, following Italy’s previous restitution of an Assyrian tablet to Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid.
Through such initiatives, Italy continues to lead efforts in safeguarding cultural treasures and promoting global cooperation in heritage protection.
