In a significant move to elevate the Thai construction industry to global standards, SCG-CPAC, a leading cement and building materials company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Samsung. The agreement, signed on August 21, 2024, at the SCG Headquarters in Bangkok, marks a strategic collaboration between the two companies to enhance 3D printing technology and the commercialization of special cementitious materials in the global market.
A Shared Vision for Sustainable Construction
The MoU was signed by Mr. Thammasak Sethaudom, President & CEO of SCG, and Mr. Surachai Nimlaor, President of SCG Cement and Green Solution Business, alongside Mr. Hong Namkoong, President and CEO of Samsung E&A Co., Ltd., and Mr. Dong Hyun Kim, Executive Vice President Engineering Technology Division of Samsung E&A Co., Ltd. This partnership reflects the shared vision of both companies to drive the future of sustainable construction through innovation and advanced technology.
Advancing 3D Printing and Material Science
Central to the collaboration is the focus on 3D printing technology, which promises to advance construction by increasing production efficiency, reducing errors, and minimizing construction waste. The automation enabled by 3D printing not only addresses the skilled workforce shortage but also shortens construction timelines and reduces costs compared to traditional methods. Additionally, the MoU outlines joint research initiatives in materials science, machinery, and equipment, as well as knowledge sharing on 3D printing construction and special cementitious materials.
As part of this collaboration, Samsung E&A plans to use 350 tons of its patented 3D printing mortar, known for its ability to create complex designs with ultra-high strength, in the construction of a building in Saudi Arabia. CPAC will support this project by providing technology consultation on 3D printing, engineering consultation, and project evaluation support, ensuring the highest standards in architectural design and aesthetics.
