3D Printed Ocular Prostheses to Redefine Quality Standards

February 28, 2024

In a new development, Fraunhofer IGD has introduced 3D printed ocular prostheses, garnering praise from patients and ocularists alike. The project has streamlined production while maintaining superior quality, offering hope to over 750,000 affected individuals in Europe.

Published in Nature Communications, the research has unveiled a meticulous process utilizing Cuttlefish:Eye software and Cuttlefish printer driver, ensuring precise customization for optimal comfort and aesthetics. Notably, the automated workflow has significantly reduced manual labor and production time, expediting treatment and enhancing patient experience. Leveraging optical coherence tomography and advanced imaging, the procedure has proven to be painless and efficient, eliminating the need for traditional impression techniques.

The success of this venture has extended beyond ocular prosthetics, as Fraunhofer IGD aimed to apply its expertise to other medical fields, promising further advancements in personalized healthcare solutions.

With more than 200 patients already benefiting from this technology, the impact was profound, with individuals describing the 3D-printed ocular prostheses as ‘life-changing’.

“Optimally adapted artificial eyes can enormously enhance the quality of life of those affected,” explains Johann Reinhard, Deputy Department Head of the 3D Printing Technology Competence Center.

“Patients describe the 3D-printed ocular prostheses as ‘life-changing.”

The researchers have also transferred their expertise in the field of 3D printing in color and their experience with Cuttlefish:Eye to other areas. In the future, dental restorations and facial prostheses would also be designed using the software and produced with the Cuttlefish printer driver. This interdisciplinary approach marked a significant step forward in the realm of personalized healthcare, promising new possibilities for patients worldwide.
