FIT AG Unveils Submerged Arc Additive Manufacturing (SAAM) for Large Metal Components

September 4, 2024

FIT AG, a leader in additive manufacturing innovations, has introduced a transforming technology known as Submerged Arc Additive Manufacturing (SAAM). This new method is set to transform the production of large-format metal components, enabling the efficient and cost-effective creation of parts weighing over 50 kilograms. SAAM is particularly significant for industries such as mechanical engineering, aerospace, and construction, where the demand for larger and more complex structures is rapidly increasing.

Advancing Large-Format Metal Production

Unlike conventional additive manufacturing methods, SAAM excels in producing very large metal structures without compromising efficiency or material quality. One of the key advantages of SAAM is its ability to drastically reduce production times while increasing the availability of components, a critical factor in industrial manufacturing. Carl Fruth, CEO of FIT AG, emphasized the importance of this innovation: “Our customers are faced with the challenge of producing ever larger and more complex structures more efficiently. The factors of time and availability are also playing an increasingly important role. With SAAM, we offer a solution that not only saves costs, but also optimizes the quality of the components.”

Research and Development: The “I AM Huge” Project

SAAM technology is part of the “I AM Huge” research project, which is being developed at the Parsberg-Lupburg Technology Campus under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. The project aims to test and refine the marketability of SAAM, tailoring it to meet the specific needs of various industries. This research initiative is crucial for ensuring that SAAM can be effectively integrated into industrial production processes, enhancing both efficiency and product quality.

Upcoming Launch and Further Information

For those interested in learning more about SAAM technology, FIT AG provides detailed information and updates on the development of the project through their website. The official unveiling of a functional prototype is scheduled for October 16, 2024. This event, targeted at a select audience, will offer attendees the opportunity to witness SAAM technology in action and explore its potential applications in various industries.
