America Makes and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) have published their April 2025 Gaps Progress Report for the additive manufacturing industry. The report documents the progress made over the past six months by standards developing organizations and industry stakeholders. It specifically addresses gaps identified in the Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing, Version 3.0, which was published in July 2023.
The original roadmap identified 141 standardization gaps across various additive manufacturing lifecycle areas including design, materials, process control, and qualification. These gaps were categorized by priority with 54 designated as high priority, 64 as medium priority, and 23 as low priority. In 91 of these cases, additional pre-standardization research and development activities were deemed necessary.
The Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative (AMSC) functions as a cross-sector coordinating body working to accelerate industry-wide standards development. Approximately 300 individuals representing 150 organizations contributed to the Version 3.0 roadmap. Participants included representatives from federal government agencies, national laboratories, standards developing organizations, industry, and academia.
The gaps progress report is designed to be a living document that will be maintained and updated periodically. It captures not only progress on existing gaps but also suggested modifications and potential new gaps for future roadmaps. The next update is expected in fall 2025.
