Haldemann Homme Provides Resources for School Education Including 3D Printing

May 23, 2017

Haldemann Homme inc. has undertaken an important program for furthering the education in STEAM fields. They are looking to provide resources to young students in order to develop their abilities in these subjects. Their project is aimed at those aimed at elementary and pre-high school aged children within the US. While theoretical teaching is important, access to technology may help boost participation more significantly. 3D printing serves as a crucial part of this educational program.

The US Labour dept has estimated a growth in the demand for STEAM fields and this project looks to be an important leg-up for certain students. Schools cannot provide these resources alone and government funding may get cut under the current administration. As a result, companies like Haldemann have had to pick up the slack.

Importance of the Project

The idea behind this program is to maintain student’s interest in certain subjects in the long-term. Studies have shown that interest in STEAM fields starts with enrolment in high school (which, in turn, translates to college enrolment). Due to this notion, it is a novel idea that institutions start developing interest early on.

Educational reforms like this are also important in improving the demographics of STEAM fields. Currently, there is a stark demarcation in gender stats, showing the difficulty in attracting female students to science and engineering fields during high school. This has led to many female students dropping out of STEM fields to non-STEM ones. Programs such as this may provide all students with the opportunities to acclimate themselves to state of the art technology and bolster their desire to pursue careers in related fields.

Many companies are gearing printers towards the education market. This is indicative of a wider need for more development in 3D printing education and training. Consequently, this can serve as a sign that 3D printing is growing towards ubiquity. The program will follow ISTE (International Society for Technological Education) standards.
