Irish Company Creates First 3D Printed Wheelchair Cushion

March 5, 2025

Irish medical device manufacturer LCS has developed a custom 3D printed wheelchair cushion featuring an integrated ventilation system. The new WheelAir Custom Cushion combines a 3D-printed lattice structure with active airflow technology to help regulate temperature and moisture for wheelchair users. The company announced successful testing of the product with users across Ireland, the UK, and Europe.

The cushion utilizes programmable foam technology that allows for customization of both shape and density. Users can select from five levels of softness across different zones of the cushion, which is 3D printed as a single piece. Each cushion is created based on individual user scans to ensure proper fit and support.

The ventilation system, developed by WheelAir – a Scottish company acquired by LCS in 2023 – addresses several health concerns common among wheelchair users. The system helps prevent issues such as muscle spasms, heat stroke, heat seizures, and pressure sores by managing excess heat and moisture through convection, conduction, and evaporation.

LCS, founded in 2008, specializes in custom seating solutions for wheelchair users and works with major wheelchair manufacturers. The company’s clinical team develops specialized seating products, with the new ventilated cushion representing their latest innovation in addressing user comfort and health needs.

“This is the first of its kind, in the world of wheelchair seating, a ventilated cushion addressing micro-climate,” said Luke Conway, Founder and Director of LCS. “Our initial testing and user trials have been very positive in regard to the wheelchair users’ comfort and ability to control their temperature.” The company is currently working to expand distribution of the cushion across European markets and beyond.
