Raw Edges Unveils 3D Printed Installation at IMM Cologne 2024

January 26, 2024

Design studio Raw Edges has showcased their latest creation, “Sense of Surface,” at the IMM Cologne trade show. Their innovative 3D printed installation delves into the dynamic interplay between light and textured surfaces, and features a centerpiece comprising a semi-transparent printed curtain and four 3D printed “volumetric spheres,” seemingly suspended in mid-air.

Crafted using a selective laser sintering (SLS) printer, the installation’s 3D structures hang gracefully from above, forming captivating three-dimensional shapes. Raw Edges co-founder Shay Alkalay described the process as akin to a tailor’s meticulous work, highlighting the precision involved in bringing the printed pieces together on-site.

Aligned with IMM Cologne’s 2024 theme, “The Sensuality of Surfaces,” Sense of Surface aimed to transform flat surfaces into intricate and three-dimensional bodies. Raw Edges expressed a long-standing fascination with the relationship between 2D graphic patterns and 3D forms, as evidenced in their previous projects like the wood-dyed Endgrain collection.

The manipulation of lighting levels throughout the space has played a pivotal role in altering the appearance of the 3D structures. Raw Edges consciously explored the dynamics of see-through surfaces, patterned structures, and transparency, emphasizing how three-dimensional forms could shift from transparent to diffused and opaque under different lighting conditions.

Accompanying the sculptural forms was a curtain made from Apollo, a semi-transparent textile created by German brand Rökona. Raw Edges incorporated 3D printing onto the fabric using pigment ink, resulting in a visually striking, see-through surface that invited visitors to step into the installation, offering an immersive and interactive experience.

Designed as an oasis of tranquility within the bustling trade show, Sense of Surface has provided attendees with a unique environment to contemplate the interplay of light and surfaces. Raw Edges, known for transforming everyday objects into inventive designs, continues to push the boundaries of 3D printing, creating thought-provoking installations that captivate the imagination.
