Toyota Unveils 4Runner TRD Surf Concept with 3D Printed Removable Top at SEMA 2024

November 8, 2024

Toyota has introduced the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept at SEMA 2024, a vehicle inspired by the Southern California surf scene. Designed to embody the spirit of open-air freedom, this unique concept features a custom 3D-printed, removable top. Engineered for versatility, the 3D-printed top is crafted to mirror both sides of the vehicle’s body precisely, ensuring a perfect fit. It can be easily removed by a single person, providing an open-air experience that reflects the adventurous legacy of the 4Runner.

Under the hood, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is powered by Toyota’s turbocharged iForce 2.4L engine, which delivers 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, this setup offers both power and efficiency. To further enhance its off-road capabilities, Toyota equipped the 4Runner TRD Surf with a long-travel suspension system. This system includes billet aluminum front upper and lower A-arms designed to withstand rugged terrains while ensuring a smooth ride. Additional upgrades feature custom front axles and a rear-end housing adapted from the Toyota Tundra, making it well-suited for tackling a variety of landscapes.

A Design that Celebrates 4Runner Heritage and Modern Surf Culture

The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is not just about performance; it’s a tribute to the heritage of the 4Runner, combined with modern California surf culture. “The 2025 4Runner reminded me of the original, with its rugged look and powerhouse 4-cylinder engine,” said Marty Schwerter, lead builder and Director of Operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center. “We wanted to create something that would resonate today while paying homage to the past. The removable top was a must, just like the original, and we made sure it’s as functional as it is stylish.”

This concept car showcases Toyota’s commitment to innovation, using advanced 3D printing technology to craft a feature that is both functional and visually striking. With its unique design elements and robust performance features, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept stands out as an embodiment of Toyota’s adventurous spirit, ideal for those looking to explore the outdoors with a blend of style and capability.
