Dubai Introduces 3D Printing Conformity Certification

October 9, 2023

Dubai Municipality introduced the inaugural system for Certification and conformity marks tailored to the 3D printing construction sector. Designed to enhance the quality of concrete mixes in Dubai-based factories, this move fortifies Dubai’s status in governing and adopting this emergent and eco-friendly construction method. H.E. Dawoud Al Hajri emphasized the system’s alignment with the 2030 Dubai Plan and its support for Dubai’s overarching 3D printing strategy.

Alia Al Harmoodi, of Dubai Municipality, underscored the system’s objectives, which encompass quality checks, efficiency of manufacturing tools, technical standards definition, and management system efficiency within factories. An informative guide detailing requirements for factories involved in 3D printing construction has been made available on the Dubai Municipality website.

The Dubai Central Laboratory will oversee the new system’s operations, from product evaluation to issuing conformity certificates, ensuring the sustained high quality and consumer protection. By leveraging 3D printing in construction, potential benefits include error reduction, material conservation, and expedited project completion with reduced labor.

“In line with its efforts, Dubai Municipality included an integrated guide on its website featuring four chapters that cover the key requirements to be met by factories and entities engaged in 3D printing for the construction sector,” said Al Harmoodi.

“The guide, which has a flexible and relevant design, sheds light on various methods and technologies of manufacturing concrete used in 3D printers, while also considering different components and specifications of materials used by companies.”

As Dubai takes this lead in certifying 3D printing for construction, it will be interesting to observe if other global cities adopt similar standards, further consolidating 3D printing’s position in sustainable construction.
