HASSELL Introduces Eco-Friendly 3D Printed Building for Tanzanian Community

August 6, 2024

Architecture and design studio HASSELL, in collaboration with local charity One Heart, has revealed a 3D-printed earth design for a central community building in Hope Village, Tanzania. This building is part of a master plan developed with ClarkeHopkinsClarke (CHC) to support and educate vulnerable young girls in Kibaha, near Dar es Salaam. The overall plan includes family accommodations, a school for 480 students, and facilities for childcare and skills training. Hope Village itself houses up to 67 children aged 3-18.

3D Printing Walls from Local Earth

The community building showcases sustainable innovation by incorporating 3D-printed earth, developed with the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). Using 3dWasp Crane Technology, the walls are printed from local earth, featuring a pattern of interwoven layers that enhance ventilation and natural light. This method uses site-based materials and reduces energy consumption, emphasizing recycling and sustainability.

Innovative Roof Structure

The design brief required a large, open area with minimal columns for flexibility. HASSELL, with structural engineers EOC, achieved this by using a central steel beam as the structural spine, supporting a tensile roof made from locally sourced timber. The roof’s fabric-like structure, resembling a woven timber blanket, is supported by corrugated metal sheets, creating a warm and spacious environment inside.

Multi-Purpose Space for Community Use

The building serves as a school hall for gatherings and meals, and a community hub on weekends. It includes facilities like a kitchen, bakery, and communal storage. The project, focusing on education and care for vulnerable girls, involves community participation from start to finish. HASSELL, One Heart Tanzania, IAAC, and CHC will manage the transport and use of 3D-printing equipment, creating jobs and training opportunities.

Community Involvement and Support

The project emphasizes community involvement, ensuring active participation in construction. Sponsorship and donations for Hope Village can be made on the One Heart website. More information is available here.
